Shanghai East Hospital is located in Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone, Pudong New Area covering an area of 22,432 square meters. The history of the hospital can be dated back to 1920 when Pudong Hospital was established and run by the local people. In the early 60's, it became a teaching oriented hospital affiliated to the Second Military Medical University, Shanghai and was renamed as Pudong Central Hospital of Huangpu District. The hospital was given the present name of Shanghai East Hospital in 1993.

With the rapid development of Pudong New Area, tremendous changes have taken place at Shanghai East Hospital. The hospital has seen much improvement in its facilities, teaching, educational system and management style. A teaching administration office was reorganized in July 1999. The teaching construction has been carried out in accordance with the assessment index system for clinical teaching at medical schools of higher institutions established by State Health Ministry.

The hospital management has attached a great importance to clinical teaching as well as teaching administration. There are three full-time staff responsible for the teaching administration at the hospital. In recent years, the hospital has been a clinical base for students from the Medical School of Suzhou University, Zhenjiang Medical School, Shanghai Second Medical University, the Stomatological Hospital of Tongji University, Huangshan Medical School, Shanghai Workers' Medical School in addition to Shanghai Second Military Medical University. The hospital has made rapid progress on clinical medical education over the years. It was authorized to offer Master's degree programs in heart & chest surgery and in endocrinology for Shanghai Second Medical University and to provide clinical training for Master's students from Shanghai Second Medical University in 2000.

The newly established Medical Comprehensive Building has a floor area of 64,000 square meters. East Hospital was the first one in China to use international bidding for the design of the Building. The present design was made by JMGR Architectural Company, USA. The building boasts its advanced facilities. The intelligence and information management system in the building represents the advanced level of contemporary hospital buildings.

At present, the hospital has 1,241 staff, among whom there are over 100 specialists with senior professional titles. They provide medical and health care service to over a million people who live along the Huangpu River in Pudong New Area. Their medical service has extended to over 2o provinces and cities and autonomous regions throughout the country. There are 650 beds for inpatients and 33 clinical technology rooms. The hospital integrates teaching with medical treatment and research.
